Art nouveau or new art is a decorative style of art that arouse in the late 19th century as a reaction to academic art . It is characterized by the use of curved and sinuous artwork especially the depiction of leaves and flowers as vines.  Some of its major proponents include Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. It was gradually eclipsed by the Art Deco movement.
